lafont

Celebrated French actor Bernadette Lafont died today. She gave an unforgettable performance in Jean Eustache’s post-May-of-’68 masterpiece La Maman et la Putain, a one-of-a-kind film that just wouldn’t have been the same without her. Last week I happened to watch Claude Chabrol’s Le Beau Serge — not a masterpiece but pretty good and worth seeing — and hands down my favorite thing about it was Lafont’s screen presence. She was very easy on the eyes of course but also had great instincts in front of the camera that made me want to learn more about her character. Lafont continued acting up until her death. I hope to someday see one of her most recent roles in the film Paulette, which has an interesting premise. She will be missed.
